Monday, October 4th
Monday was our first day at the Onesiums drop in center. As we arrived at the care center, we met this precious mom and two kids who live in a little 4x8 mud and metal structure in the ally way. This little boy (pic below) came to the care center every day to hang out – he had all of us wrapped around his finger. So adorable. I haven’t been able to get this mom and these sweet kids off my mind since coming home. As I’m feeding, bathing, and tucking our kids into their beds, I often think of them & pray for them. It has been hard for me adjusting back to normal life. Back in our comfortable home with food and clean water, while knowing this momma (and so many others) are there doing the best they can with dirt floors, and no running water or electricity. Nothing about that feels right.
Once our eyes are opened, we can’t pretend we don’t know what to do. God who weighs our hearts and keeps our souls, knows that we know, and holds us responsible to act ~ Proverbs 24:12. Lord, please never let my heart harden – let it always break for what breaks Yours.
The staff and children at Onesimus gave us such a warm welcome when we arrived. This sweet little girl, Bethlehem, loved to draw us pictures. She definitely stole my heart this week. Such a personality too!
After the welcoming ceremony, we started setting up our medical & dental clinic. It was definitely makeshift, but it flowed surprisingly well. We had a triage, waiting area, medical evaluation room, dental room and a pharmacy. On the first day, we treated 106 people and Jill and Carrie extracted a lot of teeth.

Habtamu was the RN that I had the privilege of working with in triage. He was so good with the kids. Solomon and Isayias were my right hand guys while getting stats on the kids & entertaining them. They were all such hard workers and I’m so thankful to have met them and served with them.

After a long first day, we went to the restaurant, Yod Abysinia, for authentic Ethiopian food & dancing. The food & entertainment were amazing. Traditional Ethiopian food is really good – so flavorful & colorful. It’s served on top of a sour spongy bread called injera and eaten with your hands.
Here’s a video clip from one of the Ethiopian cultural dance performances (sorry it's bad quality - from my phone). Could definitely see the original inspiration of the roger rabbit in this cultural dance. :) I still need to download some of the good videos from my video camera - will post a few later.
